Raye Gaytan Diaz's Birthday Dec 7th

Today is my mom's birthday. I miss her and remember her love. She would take all 6 of her children to lake Travis.  We would load up in the station wagon and go watch the sunset.  She also loved sitting on the front steps of our home and watch the full moon.  She had an immense love for God and enjoyed nature. Happy birthday Mom, thank you for giving us a wonderful childhood, we love you and miss you.

December 2013 Photos Sharing memories

Hello Cousins,  Please send me any pictures you have of yourself and your family.  Please include the first name.

Memories are fun, lets start writing anything and everything we remember.
Please include a date.
Even if we write about the same story, i will post it and keep them together by date.
Send it to me in an email, or add a post to this blog if you have Gmail.
i'm not giving up on this blog - just giving it time to brew.

The family of Nino and “Mariquita” Maria Gaitan

The family of Nino and “Mariquita” Maria Gaitan

Our family moved to Round Rock Texas in 1952 from the Company town of McNeil, TX. The town belonged to the Austin White Lime Company. They had a grocery store own by the Company for employees and they also had a Post Office inside the store.  Outside they had gas pumps. Bottom- line it was just like a 7-eleven or Wag- A –Bag other than they also provided shoes, and clothing etc… /not much of a selection of clothing or shoes.

The Company also provided housing at no cost at first but after electricity was hooked up they started charging the workers and their families for rent. The town was divided up with Hispanics on one side and whites in the other. I also understand that there were blacks living in the town but not very many.

I remember mom and dad saying that on paydays any groceries or gas that had being purchase, were deducted from dad’s –paycheck After those items were deducted at times mostly nothing was left And the cycle would start all over again.

Mom and Dad finally wised up and started going to downtown 6th street in Austin for their groceries/   and later to Safeway on burnet road and would use the McNeil store as little as possible.

Dad would end up working for the Austin White Lime Company as a caterpillar operator for over 29 years and only stopped because of medical issues “back problems” @that time there was no retirement pay, dad just went home.  He was 48 years old.

Bernardino “Nino” Aguinaga Gaitan – May 20th 1916 - May 31st 1995

Dad was born to Leandra & Catarino Arenas in San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Note – Dad always used the name Gaitan/ we found out years later

About Catarino/ Dad never used the name Arenas

To him Jose Gaitan was his father

Dad entered the United States thru Corpus Christi, Texas on 13 July 1920

And point of entry was the International Bridge at the age of four yrs old. With his mother - Leandra Aguina

Leandra - mama Grande “As we called her” married Jose Gaitan here in the United States   &both had 2- children Urbano and Frances

Dad was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico – to Leandra Aguinaga and Catarino Arenas. Also father of Carmen/Alberto and Santiago

Urbano Gaitan and Sister Frances are buried @the McNiel cemetery

Note- after Frances passed away her husband remarried and they

Moved to Brownsville, Tx / 1-son passed away years ago and

The other son- Anastacio Gaitan Guillen  just passed away not to long ago.

He left a large beautiful family and they live in Brownsville

His wife is still living and her name is Angela

For many years dad looked for them and on one trip to Brownsville

David told dad where they were.

Leander/ Alberto and Carmen –buried @oldTown cemetery in Round Rock, Tx Sam Bass Rd

Leander A. Gaitan was Born- 13Mar 1875-passed 22Mar 1971

Alberto Gaitan was Born- 17Sep 1907 –passed 1 Mar 1964

Alberto had no children

Carmen Gaitan was Born- 16July 1910- passed 8Jan 1967

Nino Gaitan- was Born- 20May 1916- passed 31May 1995

Sanitago Gaitan- passed away in 1990 @the age of 89yrs old

Still has 3-boys and 3-girls living in Holland, Mi

Note- Years later around the 1960s, Dad returned to Mexico to look for his father’s grave but was unable to find it. He was told that there is a yearly fee to remain in the grave if not paid the the remains are taken out and grave given to somebody else and that is what had

Happen.

The Last name “Gaitan” was given to them by Jose Gaitan “Husband” of Leandra “Here in the US” when they entered the United States /They grew up knowing him as their only father

Dad came to the United States thru Corpus Christi, Tx at the age of 4 yrs old on 13July 1920w/ his mother –Leandra Aguinaga Gaitan and

brothers- Carmen/Alberto/Santiago/- I understand that older brother “Stepbrother” Urbano Gaitan had gone to get them from Mexico/

Urbano Gaitan –was father of Janie Gaitan Martinez‘s and David

Gaitan.

Dad’s Stepfather name was Jose Gaitan

Jose Gaitan – is truly the father of Urbano/ and Frances

Gaitan/ and Leandra Aguinaga Gaitan is their true mother.

And true mother of Dad- Nino/ Carmen/ Alverto”Albert”/and Santiago

Mary “Mariquita” Canizales Gaitan – July 10th 1920 - March 02nd 2004

Note- When dad was hurt and couldn’t work mom decided that

Somebody had to work. And she went to work. To the best of my knowledge mom had never worked other than have kids. But she did

And I really feel that she enjoyed it. She made more friends +she got out of the house.  She worked for Allandale Nursing home in Austin

Later, @ Trinity nursing home here in Round Rock.

Dear Family,
Please be sure to clear your calendar for Saturday, October 22nd, for a Gaytan Family Reunion. This will include our extended family (Mommy’s aunts, uncles, cousins) from Round Rock, McNeil and other states. Uncle Dave might be able to come, and I’m inviting Daddy, too.
Gloria Marie is organizing a project to put together the Gaytan Family tree with stories and pictures. One of the librarians from the Austin History Museum is helping us put it all together, including photo restoration. It might turn into an official exhibit at the museum.
Gloria Marie and Tony Gaitan got together with several of us this week to get started. Tony had some great pictures of our grandparents and great grandparents and put together the attached history. We were asked to write something similar for our part of the family. I’ll prepare a draft, then run it by all of you. I have tons of pictures that Mommy left me, so I’ll pull those out of the attic and start getting some that would be appropriate for this project.
On October 22nd, there will be a mass at Aunt Janie’s Lakehouse. We haven’t decided what time, but you are all encouraged to attend. If there is any way you can reschedule other commitment to attend this family reunion, that would be great.
Love you all,
Etti
